Dreading the end of summer holiday/vacation? Fear not! Autumn is an exciting time to enroll in one or more social marketing courses.

SMANA is proud to promote the learning opportunities of our academic partner, the Florida Prevention Research Center at the University of South Florida. SMANA members can advance their social marketing knowledge and skills in 2018 through the following USF offerings:

    Graduate Certificate in Social Marketing

The Graduate Certificate in Social Marketing is offered to graduate students and professionals who wish to develop the skills needed to develop, implement, and evaluate social marketing programs. This certificate is offered fully online.

Online Master of Public Health (MPH) in Social Marketing

This MPH concentration equips students with the public health and social marketing skills needed to tackle complex health problems. It teaches marketing principles and social change tools to design, implement, and evaluate behavioral interventions and policy change. The program may be completed exclusively online or as a blend of courses offered on the Tampa campus and online.

Many of SMANA’s officers, directors, and volunteers have participated in the above offerings as students or instructors. Don’t miss the opportunity toup your social marketing game in 2018!

PNSMA is thrilled to provide this membership benefit!

As you know, a PNSMA membership (assuming you joined by Feb 1, 2018) includes membership in iSMA and SMANA.  Both organizations have now been provided our membership list and should have your membership active with them as of March 1, 2018.  (Membership lasts through then end of the 2018 calendar year.)

In the next few weeks you should see a "welcome email" from iSMA and SMANA letting you know how to access their website/events.  Please be patient as they get you set up in their system.

July 11, 2017 – The Wicked Problem of Wildfires
Presenter: Annie Schmidt, WA State Fire Adapted Communities

During this forum, we learned what can be done to better prepare ourselves, our neighbors and our first responders for the next wildfire. The solution requires a paradigm shift, one “branded” Fire Adapted Communities, where communities in wildfire prone areas work together to be fully prepared for and recover from wildfire, incorporating people, buildings, businesses, infrastructure, cultural resources, and natural areas. The five areas of focus include:
    1. Prescribed Fire: A planned, controlled fire to prevent future, more significant ones.
    2. Human Causes/Education: All the “Smokey Bear” recommended behavior changes.
    3. Home Protection: Including actions such as a 5 foot protective barrier/defensible space around homes.
    4. Evacuation: Similar to emergency preparedness, where recommended actions in case of fires are known and followed.
    5. Recovery: Recommended actions and resources to assist residents and businesses in the community affected by a wildfire.
